The surveillance of wastewater is a powerful, often under-discussed tool for managing and

By properly sampling wastewater with innovative, reliable technology, scientists can analyze these samples for the presence of Contaminants of Emerging Concern, including the viral pathogen SARS-Cov-2, which is the virus that leads to COVID-19.

Surveillance Program
Helmed by University of Alberta Professor Lilly Pang and other group members, our advanced water autosamplers were the technology of choice for the Pan-Alberta Wastewater Surveillance Program, enabling regular collection of 24-hour composite wastewater samples.
After the sampler was installed within the sewer systems of specified wards of the University Alberta Hospital, the water samples were collected on a programmed yet adjustable weekly schedule. This same approach was used in hospitals across Alberta to provide a comprehensive picture of the viral threat.
